SURVIVING the wide brown land

YOU NEED three things to survive an Aussie drought: friends, faith and water. All three are not easy.

One of my most magical Christmases was in the fourth year of drought. Dozens of us joined together. Dinner was a skinny sheep on a spit with ‘bring a plate’ of whatever survived in our gardens. Carol brought a whole ute load of kids’ toys for $10 from StVinnies. None of the kids noticed they were tatty, and Conrad dug a deep hole in the dry river bed, which filled with water overnight so they could paddle.
