Free ranging in the Kimberley

WHAT does the Kimberley mean to you? If you look on a chart and see that it is in a remote part of northern Australia, you might be tempted to think it is a dry, hostile and forbidding place. Perhaps our story of sailing there can change your mind.

Our masthead sloop, Mirrool, is a 50 year old Clansman 30, built in Gosford, New South Wales in 1969. I bought her in Cairns and sailed her from Queensland to Western Australia in 2015.

Along the way, I met my girlfriend Pascale and our first major voyage together was four months exploring the Kimberley. It left such an impression on us that, after returning to Perth for family commitments, we planned to sail around Australia with the land on our right, just to visit that wonderful place again.
