MOVING ON UP

Driving home from work one afternoon, my partner Alison’s number flashed up on my phone. I pulled over to answer her call. Little did I know that my entire life would change in that moment.

‘Hayden, I’ve got breast cancer,’ Alison, 48, stammered.

‘What?’ I gasped.

‘Don’t worry, we’ll get through it,’ she replied.

That was typical Alison, always ready to face problems head-on.

I’d known her since we were at school – in fact, I’d fancied her then! But we’d both married other partners, had children. Alison had a son, Daryl, now 25, and I had Ashton, now 22.
