Dream destinations
You can benefit bird conservation just by thoughtfully choosing vacation destinations.
Macaws, umbrellabirds, antpittas.… The nine top birding destinations featured on the following pages could make your birding dreams come true, and by traveling to them, you can help save species you treasure. By visiting the reserves described here, birders benefit many endemic and imperiled birds, other wildlife, and local communities.
American Bird Conservancy (ABC) supports, or has supported, all nine reserves and many more, by helping partners to protect land and/or manage the reserve to maintain habitat for birds.
Saving the rarest birds is one of ABC’s core principles — an important part of conserving all birds in the Americas. Wherever possible, ABC and its partners support reserve operations through conservation tourism and other enterprises compatible with protecting rare birds and their habitats.
Through collaboration with more than 30 partnering organizations, ABC has protected more than 1 million acres of bird habitat at more than 90 sites in 14 countries across the Western Hemisphere. The sites provide homes for 2,900 bird species — including 38 percent of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red-Listed Endangered and Critically Endangered species in the Americas. In addition, ABC helps to manage millions more acres, through Joint Ventures, the Latin American Reserve Network, and in other protected areas.
As you will see in the following accounts, many reserves have lodges that are close to or in the middle
