UNSUNG ICONS: THIRD DRAWER DOWN

Yes, it sounds like the kind of band that had a one-hit wonder in the ’90s, but what we’re referring to here is a feature of Australian homes as ubiquitous as mondo grass, gas stovetops and refrigerator art put together. In every kitchen from Murwillumbah to Manly, there is a Third Drawer Down. It’s what racing types refer to as an also-ran.

The first drawer, of course, is reserved for cutlery, or flatware, if you’re American.
