“We were first drawn to the working western division when we sent Kaldareyn (Fadareyn x Kallysta) off to a trainer and we were told he would do well as a working cow horse,” says Wendy Castle. “That was the start. We saw how many different venues there were in the working western division and how the horse had to think – challenging their mind and physical ability.

“I see the trail and ranch riding being very popular and the numbers are increasing. These are two venues where the average person can train their own horse and show successfully. There are many levels to compete in. I feel it is very important for our breed that owners be able to be successful without feeling they have to go to a trainer.

“I feel the biggest issue/challenge is getting the numbers in the cow classes. These are more expensive classes because of the cows. We have been fighting to keep cutting, yet we cannot get the
