UST SWIRLED UP around my feet as I followed my father down the country road. At seven years old, I was on my way to fish the river for the very first time. I paused for a moment, took the cane pole from my shoulder and stood it in front of me, just as I imagined Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer doing, I thought. I hoped I would be so lucky. My uncle Frank, another fine fisherman, said you needed a lot of luck to catch fish.
