Our heritage of returning from far-flung destinations with expertly crafted fabrics, rugs and other decorative accessories has led us to embrace them as part of our design lexicon and natural choices for English homes.
Whilst it is true that such pieces can be replicated by machine or digitally printed, the desire for authenticity and provenance means using craftsmen that have the right skills, techniques and knowledge, often passed down through generations over centuries.
There are also fibres that are far superior when grown or produced in particular climates and regions. Linen, silk and cotton, for example, thrive in certain countries, so it is wise to procure them from these to obtain the best raw materials.
SUPPORTING ROLE
Often there can be a misconception, fed by images of children working in cramped factory conditions (notably for mass-produced high-street fashion), that using an Indian workforce, for instance, is exploitative.
