Blue water cruising in high latitudes is not for the faint hearted. The recent travails of sailors competing in the 2018 Golden Globe
Race illustrated how vulnerable even a well found long-keeled cruising yacht can be in such conditions. Although the 2018 GGR was nominally a “race”, its ethos was more akin to extreme cruising. Contestants lined up in long-keeled cruising yachts with lengths between 32ft and 36ft and headed down into the Roaring Forties and Screaming Fifties. The yachts were not necessarily pushed excessively hard, but there were five dismastings in the extreme conditions.
