Dance Australia

A crowded horizon

IN the next 12 months some of the most popular and celebrated musicals of all time will feature in theatres across the country: some for the first time in Australia, others returning to wow new audiences or devotees who can’t get enough of them. Some return to tour to states and places they’ve never ventured to before.

The multi-award winning Bob Fosse musical, , featuring the much loved and lauded score by Kander and Ebb, opens at Sydney’s Capitol Theatre from August 20. This 2019 production stars one of Australia’s most with Hugh Jackman) as Velma Kelly. Talented singer and reality star Casey Donovan takes on the role of Mama Morton. Rodney Dobson stars as Amos Hart (Roxie’s long suffering husband) while J Furtado plays Mary Sunshine. The uber-slick ensemble cast includes Amy Berrisford; Mitchell Woodcock; Samantha Dodemaide; Todd Dewberry; Chaska Halliday; Travis Khan; Hayley Martin; Zachary Webster and Romina Villafranca. Jason Donovan will star as the charismatic laywer, Billy Flynn, in the Melbourne season only (which opens in December) – a role his father Terence made his own in the original Australian production back in the 80’s. The show travels to Brisbane in November before moving to Melbourne.
