LAYER STYLES HAVE BEEN AROUND in Photoshop for a while, but remain one of its most powerful features. They come in two flavors: the sort you click on once to get a particular effect, and the sort you spend ages painstakingly fine-tuning with small movements of sliders.
When you create a Layer Style, you’re using the edge of a layer—always a floating one, the Background layer won’t do—to guide an effect. This can be a drop shadow, a glow, a complete pattern fill constrained to the shape of the layer, or a beveling effect to provide a 3D look.
