Ian and Marcella Grant are perhaps typical of many self-builders: choosing to build a flexible home that can serve them now and for decades to come. Their new home on the Isle of Skye, ‘An Sgàileag’ (which means ‘a shelter or shade’ in Gaelic) was designed so that it could provide both living and working space from day one — and offer scope for income in the future.
“There is a thriving tourist industry on the island, and one end of the house can become its own self-catering apartment if an alternative source of income is required,” explains Ian, a principal at Skye-based Kindelan/Grant Architecture.
