    Winestate’s annual Canterbury and Nelson tasting is one of the most diverse, a testament to the range of grape varieties and wine styles being produced in these two distinct regions.

    Nelson is sheltered from much of the prevailing weather by the hills that lie to the west, creating one of NZ’s sunniest wine spots. Like most South Island regions, a strong diurnal influence results in wines with a good acid spine and flavours that are both focussed and precise. The region divides roughly into two; the flatter Waimea Plains, home to a number of larger wineries making vivid aromatic wines and the Moutere Hills where smaller producers take advantage of the warm sheltered slopes to produce wines of depth and intensity.
