AFTER a failed attempt at stopping Australian winemakers from using the term prosecco, Italian winemakers this year positioned a new quarry in their sights - Australian-born nero d’avola.
The Italians say it’s illegal because Aussie makers are employing a protected European geographical indication, as Avola is a town in Sicily. Nero d’avola translates as “black of Avola”.
The Australians counter that nero d’avola is the name of the grape variety, and the Italians are merely playing
