here has been a working quay at Gweek for well over 2,000 years, and it became the trading port for Helston when, in the 13th century, the natural formation of a shingle bank at Loe Bar blocked access from the west side of the Lizard peninsula. Timber, lime, slate and coal were brought in – the latter until as recently as 1970; while tin and copper (possibly as long ago as the Bronze Age), granite and farm produce were shipped out.
