BACKFIRE
GASSER FLASHBACKS
When I got back in town recently and saw April’s cover, there was my ’64 Nova street/ strip Gasser, but with graphics! Mine is a copy of a Nova from the late ’60s, when straight axles were on everything in the Midwest. Love the new magazine format!

BARN FIND REJECT
When I saw the article about the ’53 Corvette cutaway (Muscleaneous, HMM #192), a flood of memories came pouring out. In 1971, I was a sophomore in high school, had just gotten my driver’s license, and had saved up $1,200 for a car. I wanted something cool, like a Camaro maybe. But a buddy of mine told me about a Corvette sitting in a barn that I could buy for $1,200.
We drove from our hometown of Hanford, California, to Tulare, where we met this old guy at his barn. He opened it up and there was this old, white ’53 Corvette half covered with an old tarp, with boxes and hay piled on it and chickens living in it (the top was down). At the time, I knew very little about early Corvettes, and had never seen anything like it before. It was homely and it had a six-cylinder engine! I’d never heard of such a thing. I had no real interest in it, and I didn’t actually like it.
However, before we left, the old guy told me to look at the VIN tag. It had a bunch of zeroes on it ending in a number 3.
