WHOLE LOTTA SURGING GOING ON!

Q:I am the second owner of a 1986 Mustang GT with an automatic transmission. I bought the car from the original owner two years ago. The car has just over 37,000 miles and is a survivor, with only normal wear items replaced.

I’ve had a problem with the car for the last 18 months, and I can’t seem to find the solution. On initial warm up (after a few miles), the idle becomes erratic when I come to a stop.

It will start at 750 rpm, jump to 900, drop to 600, jump to 800, drop to 400, and, if I don’t two-foot the gas and brake, it will stall. Once at normal operating temperature, the idle settles nicely, with only an occasional bump.

The first shop I took it to changed the EGR valve, and that did not cure the problem. They thought it might be a vacuum leak, but didn’t find it.
