Beating Shazam
It is rare for me to watch a TV show live. Like many, my TV viewing consists of shows on Netflix or Hulu—meaning I watch on my time. But on Monday, May 20, that changed briefly: I eagerly awaited the opening episode of Season 3 of a show I’d never watched before. In fact, up until a few weeks before that, I’d never even heard of it.
Perhaps you know the app Shazam. When you hear a song you can’t quite place, open the app, and it will tell you in about five seconds: You’re listening to the Rolling Stones’ “Sympathy for the Devil,” or Pharrell Williams’ “Happy”…or something much more obscure.
The Fox network spun the concept of this app into a moderately successful summer show called that debuted in May of 2017. Compete against other teams to quickly identify top hits—oldies to today, across various genres—to advance to a bonus round where you compete against the app for the chance to win a grand prize of one million dollars.
