Fjords, fog and a glimpse into the past

The sun glinted off the snow-topped mountains as we navigated the waterways of the Fiordland, a large recreational reserve set into the Coast Mountains. Just as the name suggests, the mountains plunge directly into seemingly bottomless fjords. With the spring melt, waterfalls cascade down the sheer cliffs. We gingerly took our Nonsuch 324, Timaru Nui, within two metres of the rock wall, although there was more than 91m beneath her keel. This allowed her to have her first natural ‘boat wash’, a trip highlight.
