Countdown to the Azores and Back Race

Azores and Back Race (AZAB) veteran Mervyn Wheatley, 75, and his Bowman 40 Arethusa of Yealm, will be one of the 50 yachts expected to cross the start line for the 12th AZAB on 1 June.

Held every four years by the Royal Cornwall Yacht Club, the 2,400-mile single and doublehanded race is Corinthian in spirit, with entrants sailing from Falmouth to Ponta Delgada, São Miguel and back.

The first race was organised in 1975 following a letter to suggesting a solo ocean race, shorter than the Single-handed Transatlantic Race, should be held. The then-editor, Andrew Bray, joined others in organising the first race, which saw 52 starters, including Wheatley.
