We were in need of respite. I'd just dragged my family 1,500 miles the length of Vietnam, from its northern capital Hanoi down south to its frenetic financial centre Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon).
Over 10 days we had taken in the limestone beauty of Halong Bay, the lush greenery of the Sa Pa mountains, the ancient history of Hue, the flickering lanterns of Hoi An and the war-ravaged Cu Chi tunnels, by way of train, plane and automobile – alongside the odd sleeper coach, minibus and our own two trusty (but often weary) legs.
