PIGMENTATION FIXES

At around this time of year all that’s left of your summer tan are the speckled signs of too much UV exposure on your face, neck, shoulders and hands. Good news: winter is the perfect time to blitz dark patches, also known as hyperpigmentation.

‘The best way to treat superficial sun damage is to use a combination of IPL (intense pulsed light) and home products,’ says aesthetic doctor David Jack. For lighter skin types, Dr Jack recommends one or two sessions of Lumecca IPL, the most powerful IPL treatment, then,, a gentle peel that can be used at home to treat and brighten residual pigmentation patches. He also recommends using a vitamin C serum in the morning and a retinol product at night over a period of months. ‘Darker skin types with deep pigmentation and sun damage need to be treated more cautiously and IPL is not generally suitable,’ advises Dr Jack. ‘I would use the system, an at-home prescription skincare system that reduces pigmentation.’ Do wear SPF 50 every day, year-round, to prevent pigmentation.
