ARTS & EXHIBITS

MAY 2–JULY 13 Intolerance: Tales of Loss, Survival and Perseverance Multidisciplinary artist Niza Knoll knows about the insidiousness of intolerance. Her great-grandmother and great-uncles died in Auschwitz, and her father narrowly escaped Nazi-occupied Austria. Prompted by recent displays of prejudice, Knoll gathered 11 Colorado artists, including painters Michael Gadlin and Charles Luna, and asked them to illustrate the realities of hate. Their thought-provoking pieces will be displayed alongside works such as Knoll’s clay depiction of a concentration camp and an essay by her father. Wed-Sat 1-4 p.m. Niza Knoll Gallery, 915 Santa Fe Dr., 303-953-1789, nizaknollgallery.com. Free.

MAY 5–AUG. 25 Serious Play: Design in Midcentury America In the wake of World War II, American home-ware and toy creators turned to whimsical, childlike designs in an effort to lift the country out of a dark period. The result was a collection of postwar relics with playful colors, patterns, and shapes. At this eye-popping exhibit, see those high-art furnishings, including famed Hungarian-American designer Eva Zeisel’s bird-shaped bowls and Irving Harper’s bright blue kaleidoscope-inspired clock, which will make you seriously consider spicing up your own home decor. Sat-Thu 10 a.m.-5 p.m.; Fri 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Denver Art Museum, 100 W. 14th Ave. Pkwy., 720-865-5000, denverartmuseum.org. Ticket prices vary.
