Live I Alone

There are few certainties in life, such as death, rain at British festivals and corrupt politicians. Another is that American band Live don’t write songs about cars, girls, getting wasted, hobbits or what happened after they ‘Woke up this mornin’…’. Or if they do, then you wouldn’t realise it from the lyrics, and the band aren’t letting on.

Take for example their song , from 1994’s breakthough which blends muscular guitars, wilfully ambiguous lyrics and a particularly effective quiet/loud dynamic superbly, and propelled the post-grunge rockers deservedly into the spotlight. ’s softly sung opening lines: ‘…’ along with an implored’ might easily suggest a broken-heart song about lost love. But what it’s really about is… Well, your guess is as good as anyone else’s, and there’s a whole smorgasbord of interpretations out there.
