Lighting Industry's Future Dims As Efficient LED Bulbs Take Over

More efficient light bulbs are cheaper and longer-lasting than ever. But while that's good for consumers, it can be tough for an industry that's also facing shifting regulations.
Jeff Anderson worked at LEDVANCE's light bulb factory in St. Marys, Pennsylvania for more than 20 years. He's considering a career change to heavy equipment operator.

A revolution is upsetting the lighting business as LED light bulbs replace energy-hogging incandescent ones. This is good news for consumers, and the environment; using less energy reduces the greenhouse gasses that contribute to climate change.

But this shift comes with a cost, exemplified by a century old light bulb factory in St. Marys, Pennsylvania, that is the latest to shut down.

For much of its long history brand. Now all it produces is scrap metal.
