Often thought of as modern development, the first monorail was actually proposed in 1820 by Ivan Elmanov in Russia. For as long as railways have been around, engineers and inventors have been proposing single-rail alternatives to conventional railways, either to reduce construction costs or reach locations not possible with two rails.
