BORN in 1939 during World War Two, I went to Yorkshire with my family to escape the East London blitz bombings. I returned with a serious Yorkshire accent.
As a result, after the war, we spent many summer holidays with adopted relatives in Park Street, Skelton, Cleveland, ‘Aunt’ Jinny and Matt Dowey, an ironstone miner. I recall walks to Saltburn-by-the-Sea in particular, through the woods and via waterfalls.
