Paul Sullivan: David Ross was the only real candidate for the Cubs, wasn't he?

CHICAGO - When the Cubs signed David Ross to a two-year, $5 million deal in December of 2014 to serve as a backup catcher, conventional wisdom suggested he was brought in as Jon Lester's personal caddie.

Ross was coming off a season in which he hit a paltry .184 in 50 games with the Red Sox, while Lester had just been signed to a six-year, $155 million contract.
