Golden shot

Q I understand the ‘golden hour’, but what factors actually cause great light? And where does it occur?

Donna Judd

A Great light can really happen anywhere, as long as the sun is visible and not hidden behind the clouds – you don’t need to travel to exotic locations to experience it. It’s not really about location: it’s about the factors that combine to create the elements that we photographers like.

As you know, the golden hour is that first period of light when the sun rises or the period before it sets. At these times, the sun is lower in the sky, making its light more directional, softer and warmer in appearance – so it can really change how a scene typically looks.
