Since antiquity, gymnema was not only used to treat diabetes but traditionally was also used as an effective natural remedy for arthritis, for anaemia, osteoporosis, high cholesterol, cardiac disease, asthma, constipation, microbial infections, indigestion and as an anti-inflammatory and as a diuretic.
Gymnema leaves contain triterpenoid saponins and flavonoids, with the most biologically active components being gymnemic acids. The leaves also contain alkaloids, tannins, cardiac glycosides and phytosterols.
