FAR and away the finest railway picture ever painted, in the opinion of many, is Turner's Rain, Steam, and Speed. It would be an impertinence even to praise so great a work, let alone to criticise it; but if I could help anyone to appreciate and enjoy the painting, I should feel it an honour. The railway-minded critic's first remark is: "Fancy putting the firebox in the front of the engine”. But is it intended for the firebox?
