Column: How do we respond to the sort of cruelty that calls for re-writing the Statue of Liberty's promise?

I don't know what to do with the cruelty.

I don't know whether to let it into my brain and allow it to linger and put down roots, shaping my decisions about how to vote and what causes to support, sure, but also, maybe, altering my opinion of humanity.

I don't know whether it's a contagion. I fear that it is.

I don't know how to raise children around it.
