BRING THE HARVEST HOME

Early autumn is traditionally a time of plenty. The harvest is in, our toils rewarded by a cornucopia of plumptious produce with which to fill the larder. Summer vegetables like tomatoes and salads are joined by the first of the winter staples such as leeks, kale and parsnips. If late spring brings us the ‘hungry gap’, autumn celebrates its antithesis: more food than we can possibly eat over the next few weeks.

It’s all too easy to get complacent but diligence now, taking time to put aside some of this plenty, will reward you many times over when the glut thins to leaner pickings. It takes a modicum of effort and foresight for sure, but how wonderful to prepare well-filled stores to dip into during the quieter months. You with me folks? Of course you are! Then let’s get started.
