Lisa Taddeo: When I was speaking to this other writer who does a love column in the UK, her question—which is the one that I was asking—is when is the last time you had sex. That’s the column, which I think is brilliant. She was having this girls’ night with a couple of her friends, and her best friend started to talk about an illicit affair she was about to embark on.
The writer asked if she could tell that story, because she had nothing for the next day, but her friend said no. The writer said that she would change everything. You know that I will, you know what I do. The friend didn’t care; she didn’t want that out in the air. She didn’t want it to find oxygen. That’s what a lot of the people who didn’t want to go through with it felt: the idea that their story would be out in the world was frightening.
