Large scale Class 37/4
REFURBISHED in 1985 and 1986 as part of the Class 37 heavy general repair programme, the 31-strong fleet of ETH-fitted Class 37/4s was intended for use on passenger workings in Scotland, South and Central Wales where they operated on routes as diverse as the West Highland, Oban and Mallaig Extension lines, the Far North and Kyle lines, together with the Cambrian Lines and Manchester-Cardiff services.
Arrival of Class 155, 156 and 158 multiple units saw Class 37/4s lose a large segment of their passenger duties, particularly in Scotland where they continued to be used on West Highland freight traffic and the Fort William sleeper.
The class spread its wings to include stone traffic in the Derbyshire Peak District. Their close association with Scotland was uninterrupted as they continued to work bauxite, china clay and aluminium trains over the West Highland
