CHICAGO - Since President Theo Epstein threw down the gauntlet last week, threatening moves if the Cubs didn't wake from their first-half funk, the urgency to win never has been more pronounced for this particular group.
A little more than three weeks remain before the July 31 trade deadline, and it's up to the Cubs players to prevent Epstein from pulling the trigger on a shocker or two that could theoretically wake up the clubhouse.
