Rail Freight Group replies on SFRI growth

IN YOUR January editorial ‘Genuine rail freight terminal or warehouses with seldom-used sidings’, you suggest that recent applications for new rail warehousing are seeking to abuse planning law in order to get permission for their developments.

The view is written from an anti-development perspective, with no attempt to provide any balance by explaining the context and need for these rail freight schemes, which are currently being pursued through the Planning Act 2008.

The schemes referred to are a response to the Government policy set out in various documents, which seeks to encourage the transfer of freight from road to rail. The Government identified that
