A brief chat with... John Hobbs

That’s quite a high-end start John, what’s the tale? “It was a 50cc Maserati race bike, or the rolling chassis at least, and I put my Bantam engine in it,” he laughs, dispelling all visions I had of the lad clambering into a 250F or Birdcage sports car…

This start was pretty low tech stuff for a lad known more recently for blasting a twin Weslake engined drag bike in a straight line at ridiculous speeds. “The sprinting came about when I was out for a ride with friends. We were close to Duxford airfield and heard the sound of bikes being raced and went to have a look. I saw Alf Hagon blast his JAP along the strip and was hooked.”

John continues: “All I had was the 125cc Bantam, but saw the 50cc Maserati
