REGARDING the article ‘BR’s reluctant saviour’ (December 2018 issue), this implies all the Met-Camm Class 111s had 230hp engines equating to 920hp per three-car set (two power cars and one trailer), but this applied to just one test set. The standard units were fitted with 180hp engines, giving a total of 720hp per set.
More importantly, the article says the Class 124 six-car Trans-Pennine sets were 940hp, but they were actually 1840hp, as there were four power cars per set, with each power car having two 230hp engines. When the Trailer First Buffet was removed, they were very sprightly. Then, when they went down
