I fell into motorcycle racing quite extraordinarily. When I was 15 years old I began an apprenticeship at a local agricultural engineering company called Weatherheads of Royston, a Massey Ferguson tractor dealer, so I actually started off my career as a tractor mechanic!

On my journey to work I bumped into a guy who lived down the road from me who happened to race motorcycles. While passing his house I used to peer inquisitively into his garage, until one day he invited me in, and from that day onwards a true friendship developed. I spent a lot of time with him in his garage or at a race meeting, cleaning wheels, fetching petrol – I’d do absolutely anything to help him out.
