Used test: 2014 BMW F700GS VERSATILE ALL-ROUNDER

Introduced first as the F650GS in 2008, the cheapest model in the GS adventure bike range was actually powered by the same 798cc parallel twin engine fitted to the F800GS. The ‘650’ was the lower spec option of the two, though why it was labelled with those numbers is a mystery.

Five years later, the confusion continued when the bike was updated and branded as the 700GS. This was despite the motor still having a capacity 98cc larger than that figure suggests.

A retune gave it another 4bhp, restyled bodywork made it more attractive, and a greater range of factory-fitted extras gave owners the chance to improve the BMW’s suitability. The
