Yellow Rose
Wherever we go, my husband, Alex, and I like to look at flowers, always with the idea of finding one that will inspire me to paint it. We take a digital camera so if we see something interesting or pretty, we take several photos of it. We do this, as regrettably, we don’t usually have time for me to paint on site.
During just one year of having the digital camera, I have collected lots of photographs to use for my paintings. However not every one will became a painting as sometimes I like to exaggerate the features of the flower, maybe even change the shapes and the colour scheme. I don’t aim to reproduce an enlarged copy of the photograph on canvas, as I always try to transfer my feelings and mood to the work.
The painting should also have a composition of shapes and colours and here is where the artist may use artistic licence, which I feel should be based on one’s knowledge of the appearance of flowers. This only comes from looking at real flowers, photographing, drawing and painting them and it’s this skill that allows me to paint a flower that appears real – not an abstraction.
