DESIGN NOTES: PENS
In this project I am using KATO clay, which bakes at 150 degrees. Most pen barrels will melt at this temperature and I have found that the Papermate Flexgrip Ultra will work. This pen is readily available at most stationery shops or online. When baking, I lay the pen on a bed of bicarbonate of soda and completely cover it. This helps keep the temp stable and protects the pen if your oven spikes to a higher temperature, which may melt the pen or result in shiny spots. Always remove the tip and ink from the pen before covering - you are covering the barrel only, anything else will melt.
