Road Rocket

IMAGINE FOR A moment that you have the opportunity and funds to have your dream bike built to your own specifications; what would it be? Here at Trident MCS in the West Midlands, the concept that this particular customer had his heart set on was to turn a classic TT racing bike into a road-going cafe racer. Would the result reach the image that he had in his mind? And what will readers think when they see it? We will see as the build progresses.

It’s December 2017, Christmas is almost upon us and I walk into Trident MCS workshop to discover a Rocket Three special cafe racer half-way through production. Cables hang from various points along the wiring loom, only one clock is in its place, and several engine casings are missing, revealing the inner workings of the engine. But this special is truly on its way. So far, three precious months have been spent on this brief, and there are several months of designing and building to go. The customer has set his sights on showing the bike at the Mallory Park meeting next July. Will he make it? I have my doubts.

The customer has a pretty clear image of the finished bike in his mind’s eye. He knows what exhaust, advanced suspension and braking system he wants. He has also chosen the style of clocks and indicators, which is always helpful. There are already a few bikes in
