BY LATE-autumn 1965, only two ‘A3’ Pacifics remained in service, Nos. 60052 and 60100, both allocated to St Margaret’s, Edinburgh, and by this time mainly relegated to freight work.
All diagrammed steam workings over the Waverley Route were due to finish at the end of January 1966, so the chances of either loco remaining beyond this date were slim.
Drastic action was called for,
