The one and only

‘Unique’ is an overused word. But every now and again, just as with ‘legend’, ‘hero’ and ‘icon’, there comes a time where the word is absolutely fit for purpose.
And here is one such subject: the 1913-14 500cc TT Matchless. It is the only one in existence and possibly the most anticipated restoration project the National Motorcycle Museum has undertaken, ever.
And now, 15 years after being almost completely destroyed in the 2003 fire that ravaged so much of the NMM’s collection, the machine is almost fully restored. But not just aesthetically – the Matchless will soon be in running order as a fully functional motorcycle.
The brains, hands – and infinite patience – behind it all is Colin Wall, the NMM’s chief restorer, in whose modest workshop the machine stands.
