The basic principles for the engine had been established by Turner’s experiments while still at Ariel. Imaginative use of the latest materials and processes helped keep down production costs. The built up crankshaft with its central flywheel (polished for the Tiger 100) was supported on a timing side roller bearing and a drive side ball bearing. Alloy con rods minimised reciprocating weight and these pivoted on white-metal bearings, for an 80mm stroke. Inside the timing chest, gears drove separate inlet and exhaust camshafts and the Magdyno.
