CLASS 20

THE movement of London Underground ‘S’ Stock between Derby and West Ruislip continues on a regular basis and still provides employment for English Electric Type 1s. Six examples of the GBEE pool, Nos. 20096, 20107/18/32 and 20311/4, were utilised during July. Meanwhile, No. 20901 has been covering the transfer of ‘S’ Stock between Chaddesden and Litchurch Lane while No. 20905 was recovered by road from the Chinnor & Princes Risborough Railway to Barrow Hill on July 17, it having suffered wheelflats on a passing stock move in late June.

Observation of the afternoon workings between Derby, Banbury and West Ruislip found Nos. 20118+20096 and 20132+20311 moving LUL sets Nos. 21303/04 at Burton on July 3, Nos. 21561/62 two days later and Nos. 21029/30 on July 7. By July 12, however, Nos. 20118+20132 were paired with the HNRC-liveried duo of Nos. 20311+20314 when passing Tamworth High Level a little before 19.00.

Further re-arrangements of motive power saw Nos. 20107+20132 and 20118+20314 in partnership on July 17 with sets Nos. 21305/06 while on July 24, the blue-pairing of Nos. 20096+20107 teamed up with Nos. 20118+20314 (and sets Nos. 21001/02) after No. 20132 had gone to Barrow Hill.

CLASS 33

EXCESSIVE hot and dry weather depleted the number of steam-hauled workings planned for July and, in many cases, resulted in steam locomotives ‘piloting’ diesels with the latter doing much of the work. On July 3, the 1Z45/08.34 York-Carlisle ‘Dalesman’ was diesel-powered as far as Hellifield where ‘Jubilee’ 4-6-0 No. 45690 Leander took over but accompanied by ‘Crompton’ No. 33207 Jim Martin. The same locomotives ran back south with the 1Z47/16.34 Carlisle-York as far as Hellifield and then took the steam engine’s support coach to Carnforth via Wennington.

A week later, No. 33207 was in sole charge of the 1Z70/08.02 Lancaster-Carlisle via Blackburn, handing over at Hellifield to Nos. 45690 and 37706 before the Class 33/2 took the return journey (1Z72/15.35 Carlisle-Lancaster) from Hellifield to its destination, thence empty stock to Carnforth. The BRCW machine ‘top and tailed’ with No. 37706 on the 08.34 from York on July 30, handing over at Hellifield to the and No. 47237.
