Other names, such as Compass Tours, Flamboyant Trains, Stobart Pullman, Great British Railway Journeys, Very Special Trains and Northern Charters, came and went too, while Spitfire Railtours has not operated a train for more than six years, although the company still exists.

One promoter that has kept going, and built up a loyal customer base with well-loaded trains, is Retro Railtours. The company has been running a couple of trips each year from Huddersfield, Stalybridge and the surrounding areas since 2008.

Many were sceptical about.
