CLASS 20

WITH five of the Type 1s from the GBEE pool residing at Barrow Hill, GB Railfreight Class 66s were drafted in as replacements on the few transfers of London Underground ‘S’ Stock that ran during the early part of August.

For instance, on August 6, Nos. 20901+20314 were paired together and ‘top and tailed’ with No. 66729 Derby County to take the barrier wagons from Banbury to West Ruislip and five days later, the same locomotives passed Stenson Junction at 08.50 with LUL sets Nos. 21327/28 forming the late-running 7X10/01.54 Banbury-Chaddesden.

Noted at Leicester during the afternoon of August 13, the 7X08/10.48 Old Dalby-Banbury was formed of sets Nos. 21323/24 with Nos. 20132+20311 and 66724 Drax Power Station and four days later, the same motive power handled the 7X08/11.28 Breadsall-Banbury (passing Burton upon Trent at 19.15) with sets Nos. 21341/42.

CLASS 33

WHEN No. 47580 County of Essex suffered a fault at Weymouth on August 23, BR green-liveried ‘Crompton’ No. 33012 Lt Jenny Lewis RN was hastily summoned from the Swanage Railway in order to operate the return charter to London. Running as the 1Y52/19.36 Weymouth-Clapham Junction, the train was ‘tailed’ by A4 ‘Pacific’ No. 60009 Union of South Africa as far as Southampton. Thereafter, the Class 33 took the train forward to terminate at Clapham Junction prior to taking the empty stock to Southall.

Earlier that day, Nos. 33207+37669 set off from Carnforth with the ‘Scarborough Spa Express’ with the ‘Slim Jim’ coming off at Hellifield and being re-attached on the return journey, which ran as the 1Z23/17.15 Scarborough-Carnforth. The same duo had taken the ‘Scarborough Spa’ through to Holgate Sidings, York, on August 2, while No. 33207 worked the 1Z44/09.36 York-Carlisle to Hellifield on August 5, handing over there to ‘Jubilee’ No. 45690 Leander and No. 47237.

Continuing this flurry of Class 33 activity, the duo of Nos.
